A Nutritionist’s thoughts on “75 Hard” a recent trend in the fitness and health world. And what to do instead!

6 minute read.

75 Hard 1 1

Marketed as a Mental Health Challenge, 75 Hard is more than that.  Granted many people have gained many amazing benefits from completing the program. Cudos to you if you were one of them.

But I’ll wager that many of you reading this blog are full of self-doubt.

You ask yourself these questions

  • Would I even get past the first few days?
  • I’ve tried so many other weight loss programs and diets and failed at them all, that it would be just another failure….
  • I’m too sick for that!
  • I’m too old for that!

So you decide to not even try….

Sadly, this is the reality for many who are overweight or obese.  Even I was in this group for most of my life, always finding yet another program that promised to help me lose those stubborn extra kilograms that seem to increase every year.

5 rules for 75 Hard:

  • Stick to your diet of choice
  • Drink one gallon of Water
  • 2 X 45 minute workouts – one outside
  • Reading 10 pages of a nonfiction book
  • Taking a daily progress photo

Diet: Follow a diet plan of your choice (no cheat meals, no alcohol). NO! NO DIETS! You simply need nutrient dense whole foods designed specifically for YOU!

Hydration: Drink one gallon of water daily.   That’s 3.79 litres. What! NO! The amount of water you should drink depends on your height, weight and age.

Workouts: Complete two 45-minute workouts daily; one must be outdoors.   Good! Movement is beneficial!  BUT perhaps not two sessions daily. What sort of exercise? Is it something you enjoy? What intensity? Are you capable? Do I start slowly?

Reading: Read 10 pages of a self-help or educational book (no audiobooks).   TICK! Relaxing is essential!

Progress Photo: Take a daily progress picture. Ok – not really! Daily weighing is not recommended because our weight fluctuates from day to day, hour to hour! It can cause excess anxiety due to obsessing over our weight.

Andy Frisella, the creator of 75 HARD stresses it’s about Mental Toughness! Well! For many that’s a turn off right there! If you don’t think you have that, then you would give up right now! Right? He markets himself as Mr Tough Guy. But he’s not even a fitness instructor or a nutritionist….

Andy says “75 HARD is the only program that can permanently change your life.”  Well! I would definitely argue to differ with that statement!  It is not the only way! There is an easier way!

I know, because I did it my way 7 years ago, with the help of my highly personalised, targeted nutrition program from Metabolic Balance®! It’s based on SCIENCE! So no guessing which foods you need!

After becoming a Metabolic Balance® practitioner in February of 2019, I was given the opportunity to transform myself first.  I really needed to lose weight. Who would take advice from a fat nutritionist? How could I tell my clients all about a program that I haven’t actually tried myself? And then expect them to follow it. How would I know if it would work for them?

There were only a handful of Metabolic Balance Practitioners here in Australia at that time. After completing the 3 month program, I was so amazed with the results that I continued on, releasing over 15 kg of fat over 5 months! My husband did it with me and he released the same amount! We are both still on our Metabolic Balance programs over 7 years later, eating 80% my Metabolic Balance foods and 20% other foods.

My body can now handle a little processed or high carbohydrate foods easily. I don’t suffer from feeling tired next day. I know how much I can eat. After an event where the foods are not on my program, I enjoy them and the company at the time, then I always make my next meals my safe Metabolic Balance foods. My body responds and detoxes easily from the ‘other’ foods because it knows it has the right nutrients on board to do the work of detoxing and healing (such as your intestinal lining).

My goal as a registered Clinical Nutritionist and official Metabolic Balance practitioner, is to show women over 50 years in particular, like myself, that it is easy to lose the ‘excess weight’. Really we want to release that excess Subcutaneous fat (just under the skin) and Visceral fat (surrounding the organs). The Metabolic Balance personalised program and full support from myself provides everything you need to be successful to achieve your goal whether it be just feeling 100% better and maintaining your current weight or releasing that excess fat that has been creeping on every year, as you approach perimenopause and menopause or andropause for men.

If you know the following your life will change:

  • Which specific foods to eat (or not eat).
  • How much of each food is required to supply the right nutrients your body needs.
  • The exact foods (and nutrients they contain), to correct your nutrient deficiencies or excesses.
  • The foods selected for you will change the way your hormones work to correct your metabolism, even if you have hormonal fluctuations due to your monthly cycle, even if you have autoimmune conditions or other diseases..
  • Eating your specific foods listed on your personal Metabolic Balance® list will reduce those unwanted body symptoms, such as PMS, headaches, pain from arthritis, potentially correct or reverse Diabetes Type 2, reduce excess body fat (overweight or obese), help you get good sleep, increase energy and vitality, address auto-immune conditions and extend your life! And lots more!
  • The perfect timing of each meal to reduce cravings and promotes saiety (a feeling of fullness).
  • 8 sensible lifestyle guidelines recommended by Metabolic Balance.
  • You have full support from your Clinical Nutritionist, Susan throughout the 3 month program. And afterwards!
  • How much water you need is calculated from your height, body weight and your age. It may not be as much as 75 hard suggests.
  • You are welcome to ask as many questions as you like via text, email or phone call, to your Metabolic Balance practitioner throughout the program and beyond.
  • No exercise is required. In fact, during the first two weeks (or rather 16 days), you are asked to NOT do strenuous exercise!  But don’t get me wrong – I do encourage doing some form of exercise that you love down the track, after you have released most of your excess weight and are feeling more energised and ready to start moving.
